Albenaz tablets are a prescription medication used to treat worm infections.
Indications:
It is used in the treatment of single and mixed intestinal nematode infestations including ascariasis, enterobiasis, hookworm, stongylodiasis, and trichuriasis. It may also be used in the treatment of capillariasis and trichostrongyliasis and other tissue nematode infections.
Directions/Usage:
The usual dose for adults and children above 2 years with ascariasis, enterobiasis, hookworm and trichuriasis is 400mg as a single dose with meals. In enterobiasis, the dose may be repeated in 1 to 2 weeks.
In treatement of echinococcosis, albenaz is given by mouth with meals in a dose of 400mg twice daily for 28 days for patients weighing over 60kg. A dose of 15mg/kg body weight in two divided dose daily for patients weighing less than 60kg with a maximum daily dose of 800mg.
Common Side Effects:
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache and dizziness.
Safety Advice:
Do not use if you have a known allergy to albendazole or inactive ingredients. Not safe for use in pregnancy. Safety use of Albenaz in pregnancy has not been established and should not be taken by pregnant women at any stage of their pregnancy or by women who are likely to get pregnant.
Overdosage and treatment:
Respiratory arrest and tachyarrhythmias associated with continuous convulsions have been reported following an overdosage of albendazole. If poisoning or overdosage is suspected, vomiting must be induced and gastric lavage instituted.
