Aciclovir is an antiviral medication (nucleoside analogue) used for treating infections caused by herpes simplex virus—including cold sores, genital herpes—and varicella‑zoster virus (chickenpox, shingles).

Consume Type

 Directions / Usage

200 mg Tablets

• Cold sores & genital herpes (treatment): 200 mg five times daily (~every 4 hrs) for 5 days (omit middle-of-night dose).
• Suppression (recurrences): 200 mg four times daily (~every 6 hrs), or alternative regimens including 400 mg twice daily, as advised by physician .
  

400 mg Tablets

• Treatment of genital herpes: 400 mg three times daily for 5 days, or 800 mg three times daily for 2 days for short-course high-dose option .
• Suppression: 400 mg twice daily for 6 to 12 months; reassess after 12 months and consider breaks if appropriate .
  General guidance: Begin treatment at earliest onset of symptoms (e.g., tingling before cold sore appears) and maintain good hydration throughout course .

Common Side Effects

• Common : nausea, headache, diarrhea, skin rash, fatigue, dizziness, photosensitivity reactions (rash on sun‑exposed skin)
• Occasional/Infrequent  confusion, vertigo, abdominal pain, constipation, hair loss, edema, weakness.
  
• Rare : neurotoxicity (hallucinations, seizures), renal impairment (crystalluria), blood disorders (leukopenia, TTP), severe skin reactions (SJS/TEN), anaphylaxis .

• Hydration is essential—drink plenty of fluids to support renal elimination and prevent crystalluria.

• Photosensitivity: use sun protection.
• Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Aciclovir is generally considered safe, but consult your physician before use.
