COARTERM ORIGINAL 24S    

Why do you need to give this medicine? Coartem Tablets are indicated for treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) in patients 2 months of age and older with a bodyweight of 5 kg and above.

INGREDIENTS

Coartem Tablets contain a fixed combination of 2 antimalarial active ingredients, artemether 20mg, an artemisinin derivative, and lumefantrine 120mg.

ADDED INFORMATION

This drug also contains colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and polysorbate 80.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.

Co-administration with rifampicin, carbamazepine, st john’s wort, phenytoin.

DOSAGE

Adults greater than 16 years, body weight 35kg and above:

4 tablets as a single initial dose, 4 tablets again after 8 hours, and then 4 tablets twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course of 24 tablets).

Children 5kg to less than 15kg:

One tablet as a single initial dose, 1 tablets again after 8 hours, and then 1 tablet twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course of 6 tablets).

Children 15kg to less than 25kg: 

Two tablets as a single initial dose, 2tablets again after 8 hours, and then 2 tablet twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course of 12 tablets).

Children 25kg to less than 35kg: 

Three tablets as a single initial dose, 3 tablets again after 8 hours, and then 3 tablet twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course of 18 tablets).

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS 

Side effects are not experienced by all patients.  They include headache, anorexia, dizziness, asthenia, arthralgia, and myalgia. Report to the pharmacist or physician if side effects worsen or last more than a few days.

WARNING

Avoid its use if you have QT prolongation

Do not use together with other antimalarials.

STORAGE

Store in a cool, dry place at 15 to 25oC. Protect from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
