It is used for the treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms, including beta lactamase-producing staphylococci. Exaflox Powder for oral suspension works by inactivating the penicillin-binding proteins present on the membrane of the bacteria; weakening of the bacterial cell membrane. Exaflox may be used to treat chest infections, throat or nose infections, ear infections, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, digestive system infections, kidney, bladder or urethra infections.

EXAFLOX SUSPENSION

Why do you need to give this medicine?  Exaflox powder for oral suspension contains Flucloxacillin as an active ingredient. It is used for the treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms, including beta lactamase-producing staphylococci. Exaflox Powder for oral suspension works by inactivating the penicillin-binding proteins present on the membrane of the bacteria; weakening of the bacterial cell membrane. Exaflox may be used to treat chest infections, throat or nose infections, ear infections, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, digestive system infections, kidney, bladder or urethra infections.

INGREDIENTS

Each 5ml reconstituted solution contains Flucloxacillin sodium equivalent to flucloxacillin 125mg.

ADDED INFORMATION

Exaflox contains 10.3 mg of sodium. This should be included in the daily allowance of patients on a sodium restricted diet. Contains sucrose; patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.

DOSAGE

Adults: total daily dosage of 1 g-3 g in three to four equally divided doses.

Children over 10 years: total daily dosage of 1 g- 3 g in three to four equally divided doses.

Children under 10 years: 25-50 mg per kg body weight in 24 hours. This will be given in three or four divided doses.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

If you notice any of the following serious very rare side effects stop using Exaflox and contact your doctor immediately:

  • Hypersensitivity or severe allergic reaction including itchy rash, itching, sore mouth or eyes, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue or breathing problems.
  • Severe bloody diarrhoea
  • Skin rash with circular, red patches (Erythema multiforme).

Common: minor stomach disturbances (diarrhoea or stomach upset)

Uncommon: rash, itching, red/purple discolourations on the skin.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

Exaflox should be taken half or one hour before meals.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using Exaflox suspension if you:

  • have liver or kidney problems
  • have any serious illness, other than this infection
  • are 50 years old or over.
  • are giving this medicine to a newborn child.
  • Have ever had a skin rash or swelling on the face or neck when taking an antibiotic.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby.

STORAGE

Unopened dry powder: do not store above 25°C

Following reconstitution: once reconstituted, Exaflox suspension remains stable for 14 days stored in a refrigerator at 2-8°C. Do not freeze.
