  • Squill Tincture 0.6 ml (expectorant to help remove phlegm)
  • Liquorice Liquid Extract 0.125 ml (expectorant and soothing agent) Other ingredients: Peppermint oil, anise oil, capsicum tincture (contains capsicum oleoresin, ethanol), syrup (sucrose), liquid glucose, magnesium aluminium silicate, sodium methyl/ethyl/propyl parahydroxybenzoates (E215, E219), glycerol (E422), caramel (E150c), purified water. Variant:

  • Standard mentholated formulation (brownish liquid with menthol/peppermint/anise flavor); available in bottle sizes like 150 ml, 180 ml, or 300 ml (most common retail sizes). A sugar-free variant (Covonia Chesty Cough Sugar Free Syrup with guaifenesin) exists separately, but this is the traditional mentholated version.

Directions/Usage:

Shake the bottle well before use. Take orally.

  • Adults, the elderly, and children over 12 years: 1 or 2 x 5 ml spoonfuls every 4 hours if required.
  • Children 5–12 years: 1 x 5 ml spoonful every 4 hours if required. Do not exceed 4 doses in 24 hours. Use as needed for symptom relief (typically short-term; consult if cough persists >3–5 days). Not for children under 5 years without medical advice.

Common Side Effects:

  • Generally well-tolerated; rare and mild effects include hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., dermatitis, skin rash, flushing, itchy lumps/hives), gastrointestinal upset (e.g., nausea), or effects from liquorice (higher sodium/water retention or low potassium leading to muscle weakness, confusion, disorientation, irregular heartbeat in prolonged/excessive use). Allergic reactions to ingredients (e.g., anise, capsicum) possible but uncommon.

  • Amber glass or plastic bottle (e.g., 150 ml, 180 ml, or 300 ml) with screw cap (often child-resistant); boxed with patient information leaflet and measuring spoon.

Safety Advice:

  • For oral use only. Not for dry coughs (use suppressant instead) or if allergic to any ingredient (e.g., liquorice, squill, menthol, anise, capsicum). Caution in diabetes (contains sucrose 1.3 g and glucose 1.3 g per 5 ml; monitor blood sugar), heart conditions (liquorice may affect potassium/sodium balance), or if pregnant/breastfeeding (consult doctor). Contains alcohol (may affect driving or machinery in high doses). If cough persists >3–5 days, worsens, or includes fever, blood, shortness of breath, or chest pain, seek medical advice (may indicate serious condition). Not a substitute for treating underlying infections. Report side effects via local schemes (e.g., MHRA Yellow Card in UK).
