Description:
Dulcolax Adult Sodium Picosulfate Syrup is a stimulant laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation in adults and children over 10 years. It works by stimulating the nerve endings in the intestinal wall to increase peristalsis (bowel movement) and promote water and electrolyte accumulation in the colon, resulting in a bowel movement usually within 6–12 hours after oral administration.
Prescription:
- No prescription required in most countries (over-the-counter laxative). In some regions it may be pharmacy-only—check local regulations.
Therapeutic Category:
- Stimulant laxative / Contact laxative (for short-term constipation relief and bowel preparation before procedures).
Active Ingredients/Composition:
Sodium picosulfate 5 mg per 5 mL (1 teaspoonful). Other ingredients: Sorbitol (sweetener and osmotic agent), glycerol, propylene glycol, ethanol (small amount), sodium benzoate (preservative), citric acid, flavoring agents (e.g., orange or neutral), and purified water.
Variant:
- Standard 5 mg/5 mL oral syrup (adult strength); Dulcolax also offers 5 mg gastro-resistant tablets and 10 mg suppositories, but this is the liquid syrup variant.
Consume Type:
Directions/Usage: Adults and children over 10 years:
- For constipation: 5–10 mL (1–2 teaspoons) at bedtime (effect in 6–12 hours).
- For bowel preparation (e.g., before colonoscopy/endoscopy): Higher dose as directed by doctor (often 10 mL the night before + additional laxative regimen). Shake bottle well before use. Take with a full glass of water. Use for short periods only (maximum 7 days unless advised by doctor). Not for daily long-term use.
Common Side Effects:
- Abdominal cramps, colic pain, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, or mild rectal irritation. Rare: Electrolyte imbalance (dehydration, low potassium with prolonged/excessive use), allergic reactions (rash, itching), or dependence on laxatives with chronic overuse.
Package Type:
- Amber glass or plastic bottle with measuring spoon or cup (usually 100 mL or 300 mL bottle).
Storage Advice:
- Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed after use. Keep out of reach of children.
Safety Advice:
- Not for use in children under 10 years (unless prescribed), acute abdominal pain of unknown cause, intestinal obstruction, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration, or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis). Use caution in pregnancy (short-term use only), breastfeeding, or elderly patients (risk of dehydration/electrolyte imbalance). Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Stop and seek medical help if no bowel movement after 3 days, severe cramps, blood in stool, or persistent diarrhea. Not for weight loss. Prolonged use may cause dependence or bowel atony.
Product Substitutes:
- Generic Sodium Picosulfate Syrup 5 mg/5 mL (various brands in Ghana)
- Laxoberal Syrup (original sodium picosulfate brand in some markets)
- PicoPrep or CitraFleet (combination products for bowel prep)
- Other stimulant laxatives: Bisacodyl syrup/tablets (Dulcolax tablets), Senna syrup, or Glycerol suppositories. Consult a pharmacist or doctor for local alternatives.
