Description:

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used as an osmotic laxative, primarily for the treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. It works by drawing water into the bowel, softening stools, and encouraging bowel movements. It also lowers ammonia levels in the blood for patients with liver disease.

Prescription:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC)

Dosage:

Constipation:

  • Adults: 15–45 ml per day initially, then 15–30 ml for maintenance

  • Children 7–14 years: 15 ml/day

  • Children 1–6 years: 5–10 ml/day

  • Infants under 1 year: Up to 5 ml/day

Hepatic Encephalopathy:

  • Adults: 30–45 ml, 3 to 4 times per day, adjusted to produce 2–3 soft stools daily

Dosage should be adjusted based on patient response.

Directions/Usage:

  • Very common: Diarrhoea (especially at high doses)

  • Common: Flatulence, abdominal discomfort, nausea
