Description:
Lavina Cefuroxime 750mg Injection is a broad-spectrum, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, and perioperative prophylaxis (surgical infection prevention). It is effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some beta-lactamase-producing strains.
Prescription:
- Prescription required; administered only by healthcare professionals (intramuscular or intravenous).
Therapeutic Category:
- Antibiotic (second-generation cephalosporin; bactericidal beta-lactam).
Active Ingredients/Composition:
- Cefuroxime sodium 750 mg per vial (powder for reconstitution). Reconstituted with sterile water for injection or compatible diluent.
Variant:
- Standard 750 mg powder for solution for injection/infusion in vial (common adult/pediatric hospital strength; other variants include 250 mg, 1.5 g, or oral suspension/tablets in cefuroxime line).

Directions/Usage:
Administered by a doctor/nurse only.
- Reconstitute vial with 3–6 mL sterile water for injection (shake gently to dissolve).
- Adults: 750 mg every 8 hours IM/IV (severe infections: up to 1.5 g every 8 hours).
- Perioperative prophylaxis: 1.5 g IV at induction of anesthesia, followed by 750 mg IM/IV at 8 and 16 hours later.
- Children: 30–100 mg/kg/day divided every 6–8 hours (max adult dose).
- Duration: 7–14 days (or as directed).
- IV infusion: Dilute in 50–100 mL compatible fluid (e.g., 0.9% NaCl, 5% dextrose) and infuse over 30–60 minutes.
- Never give as rapid IV bolus (risk of phlebitis or arrhythmias).
Common Side Effects:
- Pain/redness/swelling at injection site, diarrhea, nausea, rash, eosinophilia, transient liver enzyme elevation, or candidiasis (superinfection). Rare: Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, neutropenia, or seizures (high doses/renal impairment).
Package Type:
- Single-dose glass vial (750 mg powder) + ampoule of sterile water for reconstitution (usually 3 mL or 6 mL); packed in boxes of 1, 5, or 10 vials.
Storage Advice:
- Store unreconstituted vials below 30°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. After reconstitution: Use immediately or refrigerate at 2–8°C and use within 24 hours (check product label). Keep out of reach of children.
Safety Advice:
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or severe penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity risk). Use caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment required), history of GI disease (risk of C. difficile colitis), or concurrent nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides). Monitor renal function and full blood count during prolonged therapy. Pregnancy: Category B (generally safe). Breastfeeding: Safe in usual doses (minimal excretion in milk). Report rash, diarrhea, fever, or signs of allergy immediately. Not for viral infections. Complete full course to prevent resistance.
