Description:
Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It works by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
Prescription:
- Prescription-only medication.
Dosage:
- Hypertension (Adults): Starting dose is typically 10 mg once daily. Maintenance dose ranges from 20 to 40 mg once daily. Maximum dose is 80 mg/day.
- Heart Failure: Starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily. Usual effective dose ranges from 5 to 20 mg once daily.
- Post-Myocardial Infarction: Start with 5 mg within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, followed by 5 mg after 24 hours, then 10 mg after 48 hours, and then 10 mg once daily.
- Pediatric Hypertension (6 years and older): Starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily for patients weighing 20 to <50 kg, and 5 mg once daily for those ≥50 kg. Maximum doses are 20 mg and 40 mg respectively.
Note: Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal impairment or those on diuretic therapy
