Product description

Description:A topical ophthalmic corticosteroid ointment used to treat inflammatory and allergic conditions of the eye. The ointment form delivers dexamethasone locally to reduce swelling, redness, and irritation.

Prescription:Prescription only

Therapeutic Category:Ophthalmic corticosteroid / anti-inflammatory agent for eye inflammation.

Active Ingredients/Composition: Dexamethasone sodium phosphate, equivalent to dexamethasone 0.1% (0.1 g per 100 g, or 1 mg per gram of ointment) in many formulations.

– Inactive ingredients include white petrolatum, mineral oil, methylparaben, propylparaben as preservatives (in some formulations) and lanolin oil in some country labels.

Variant:

The ointment form (3.5 g tube) — another variant is the ophthalmic suspension / drops version of Maxidex.

Consume Type:Topical ocular use only — applied on the eye (in the conjunctival sac) via the ointment tube.

Directions/Usage:Apply a small ribbon of ointment (about ½ inch) into the conjunctival sac (lower eyelid) up to 4 times daily initially.

– When the condition improves, dosage may be tapered gradually to once daily.

– Ointment should be administered after any eye drops if both forms are used.

– To apply: pull down lower eyelid, place ointment in conjunctival sac, avoid touching tube tip to eye/skin, close eyelids.

Common Side Effects:Eye irritation (burning, stinging)

– Blurred vision (temporary)

– Increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma) with prolonged use

– Posterior subcapsular cataracts (with chronic use)

– Secondary ocular infections (bacterial, fungal)

– Delayed wound healing

– Possible corneal thinning or perforation in weakened cornea

– Hypersensitivity reactions

– Rarely, systemic corticosteroid effects (especially with prolonged absorption)

Package Type:Sterile ophthalmic ointment in a 3.5 g tube (with ophthalmic tip) in a sealed carton.

Storage Advice:Store at controlled room temperature (often 8–27 °C) — keep the tube tightly closed, protect from light and heat.

Safety Advice/Precautions:Do not use in viral, fungal, or bacterial eye infections unless combined with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

– Contraindicated in epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, mycobacterial ocular infections, untreated glaucoma, untreated bacterial infections of eye.

– Prolonged use increases risk of glaucoma, cataract formation, optic nerve damage — intraocular pressure should be monitored when used >10 days.

– Use with caution in patients with thinning cornea or sclera — risk of perforation.

– Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use should be avoided — taper dosing.

– Avoid in pregnancy unless benefit outweighs risk, and in breastfeeding with caution.

– Avoid contact lens use during therapy.

– Do not touch ointment tip to any surface to prevent contamination.

Product Substitutes:Other ophthalmic corticosteroid ointments or drops containing dexamethasone, prednisolone, loteprednol, or other anti-inflammatory agents, depending on indication and sensitivity.
