Description:

Metoclopramide is a dopamine antagonist that enhances gastrointestinal motility and is primarily used to treat nausea and vomiting. It is available in various forms, including tablets, oral solutions, and injections.​

Prescription:

  • Prescription-only medicine (POM)

Dosage:

  • Adults: 
    • Oral Tablets/Solution: 10 mg up to three times daily. 
    • Injection: 10 mg administered slowly intravenously or intramuscularly, up to three times daily. 
    • Maximum Daily Dose: 30 mg or 0.5 mg/kg body weight. 
    • Maximum Treatment Duration: 5 days. 
  • Paediatric Patients (1–18 years): 
    • Dose: 0.1–0.15 mg/kg body weight, up to three times daily. 
    • Maximum Daily Dose: 0.5 mg/kg body weight. 
    • Note: Contraindicated in children under 1 year of age.​

Consume Type:

Directions/Usage:

  • Administer doses before meals. 
  • For injections, administer slowly over at least 3 minutes. 
  • Do not exceed the recommended duration of treatment.​ 

Common Side Effects:

  • Drowsiness. 
  • Fatigue. 
  • Diarrhoea. 
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., involuntary movements). 
  • Restlessness. 
  • Hypotension.​
