Description:
Nystatin Oral Suspension is an antifungal medication used to treat and prevent candidal infections of the oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract. It is particularly effective against Candida albicans, the primary cause of oral thrush. The suspension works by binding to fungal cell membranes, causing leakage of cellular contents and cell death.
Prescription:
- Prescription-only medication.
Dosage:
- Infants (1 month to 2 years): 1 ml dropped into the mouth four times daily.
- Children (≥2 years) and Adults: 1 ml dropped into the mouth four times daily; for intestinal candidiasis, adults may require 5 ml four times daily.
- Prophylaxis in Newborns: 1 ml once daily. The suspension should be kept in contact with affected areas as long as possible before swallowing. Treatment should continue for 48 hours after symptoms resolve to prevent relapse.
