  • Other variants include 10 mg and 40 mg strengths, as well as combinations (e.g. omeprazole with sodium bicarbonate).

  • Adults (standard dose): 20 mg once daily, typically in the morning before meals. Duration depends on indication (e.g., 2–8 weeks for ulcers, longer for reflux)

  1. Safety Advice
  • Contraindications: Allergy to omeprazole or related PPIs; concurrent use with nelfinavir.
  • Precautions: Exclude gastric malignancy when ulcer suspected; long-term use (>1 year) increases fracture risk (especially hip, wrist, spine); monitor magnesium levels and bone health; rare skin reactions require immediate discontinuation.

  • Drug Interactions: May reduce effectiveness of clopidogrel and affect absorption of certain medications.
  • Special Populations: Pregnancy—use with caution; breastfeeding—omperazole is excreted in milk but unlikely to cause adverse effects. Use in children ≥1 year with appropriate supervision.
  • Chronic Use Risks: C. difficile infection, gastric cancer masking, nutrient malabsorption concerns (e.g., vitamin B₁₂, iron).
