Description:
Travatan (travoprost ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It belongs to the class of prostaglandin analogs, which increase uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor to lower eye pressure and help prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss. It is a first-line topical treatment for these conditions, effective as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy.
Prescription: Prescription-only (Rx). Requires a doctor’s prescription (typically from an ophthalmologist) after eye examination, IOP measurement, and diagnosis confirmation. In Ghana and similar markets, it is regulated and available through pharmacies (imported via Novartis distributors or local importers).
Therapeutic Category:
Ophthalmic antiglaucoma agent / Prostaglandin F2α analog ( topical ocular hypotensive for glaucoma and ocular hypertension).
Active Ingredients/Composition: Active ingredient: Travoprost 0.004% w/v (40 micrograms/ml or 0.04 mg/ml). Formulated as a sterile, isotonic, buffered aqueous solution. Preservative: Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) 0.015% in original Travatan; Travatan Z uses a preservative-free or alternative system (e.g., sofZia® with boric acid, propylene glycol, sorbitol, zinc chloride). Other excipients: Polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil, tromethamine, boric acid, mannitol, edetate disodium, sodium hydroxide/hydrochloric acid (pH adjustment), purified water.
Vitamins: None.
Minerals: None (trace zinc chloride in preservative system of Travatan Z, not therapeutic).
Variant: 0.004% ophthalmic solution (standard strength; Travatan Z is the benzalkonium-free reformulation in many markets; available in 2.5 ml or 5 ml bottles; no major strength variants).
Consume Type:
Ophthalmic (topical eye drops; instil into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s); external use only).
Directions/Usage: Adults (including elderly): Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening (optimal IOP reduction with nighttime dosing). Do not exceed once-daily dosing (more frequent use may reduce efficacy). Technique: Wash hands, tilt head back, pull lower eyelid down, apply 1 drop without touching dropper tip to eye/lid, close eye gently for 1-2 minutes (nasolacrimal occlusion to minimize systemic absorption), blot excess. Wait 5 minutes before other eye drops. Remove contact lenses before use (wait 15 minutes to reinsert). Follow ophthalmologist’s instructions; regular IOP monitoring required.
Common Side Effects:
Package Type:
Plastic dropper bottle (typically 2.5 ml or 5 ml fill volume in 5 ml or 7.5 ml bottle; sterile, tamper-evident screw cap/dropper tip; supplied in carton with patient information leaflet).
Storage Advice: Store at room temperature (below 25-30°C; do not store above 30°C), protected from light. Keep bottle tightly closed. Discard 4 weeks after first opening (or as per label). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Safety Advice:
Product Substitutes: Other travoprost 0.004% eye drops: Travatan Z (Novartis/Alcon reformulation), generic travoprost (various importers). Alternatives: Latanoprost (Xalatan), bimatoprost (Lumigan), tafluprost (preservative-free), or non-prostaglandin agents like timolol (beta-blocker), brimonidine, dorzolamide—consult ophthalmologist per Ghana guidelines (prostaglandins often first-line due to efficacy and once-daily dosing).
