Oral ingestion — swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water (unless otherwise instructed). The capsule is intended to act locally in the intestines (little systemic absorption). 

Directions/Usage

Follow your doctor’s instructions. The usual indication: for C. difficile-associated diarrhea: e.g., 125 mg every 6 hours for 10 days (standard dose) although 250 mg capsules may be used in some markets. 

– Swallow capsules whole; do not crush or open unless instructed.

– Continue full course even if you feel better early to avoid relapse and resistance.

– If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless nearly time for the next; do not double the next dose.

– Possible hearing loss or ringing in the ears (ototoxicity) in certain high-risk patients (especially with kidney impairment) though rare with oral form. 

– Kidney problems (in patients with pre-existing renal impairment) — although oral absorption is minimal, caution still advised. 

– Risk of superinfection or new colitis if other bacteria/fungi grow.

– When treating gut infections, worsening diarrhea or bloody diarrhea may indicate serious complications (e.g., toxic megacolon) and require urgent medical attention.

– Keep capsules in original packaging until use.

– Keep out of reach of children.

– Do not use beyond the expiry date.

– Because oral vancomycin acts in the gut and is poorly absorbed, it is not effective for systemic infections via this route — do not use for other infections unless indicated. 

– Inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease, hearing problems, intestinal disease, or use other ototoxic/nephrotoxic drugs. 

– Because antibiotics can disrupt normal gut flora, monitor for worsening diarrhea or signs of colitis (especially after treatment).

– Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed — limited data for oral form.

– Avoid sharing the medicine with others — use only for the indication prescribed.

Other generic vancomycin oral formulations (125 mg or 250 mg capsules) or oral solution forms (where available). However, substitution should only be done under clinician/pharmacist guidance because dosing and strength matter.
