Product description

Description:

Ampicilline Suspension 100ml is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic in oral liquid form. It is used to treat various bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including respiratory tract infections (e.g., tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain infections in children. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. It is particularly useful in paediatric patients who cannot swallow capsules or tablets.

Prescription:

Prescription-only (Rx).

Therapeutic Category:

Antibacterial / Beta-lactam antibiotic / Penicillin (broad-spectrum penicillin for systemic bacterial infections).

Active Ingredients/Composition:

Active ingredient: Ampicillin (as ampicillin trihydrate) – typically 125 mg or 250 mg per 5 ml after reconstitution. The 100ml bottle is supplied as powder for reconstitution with water to make 100 ml suspension.

Vitamins: None.

Minerals: None.

Variant: Oral suspension in 100ml bottle (powder for reconstitution; paediatric-friendly; available in 125 mg/5 ml or 250 mg/5 ml strengths).

Consume Type:

Oral (liquid suspension; shake well before each dose; measured with spoon or syringe).

Directions/Usage: Reconstitute the powder with the required amount of boiled and cooled water as indicated on the label to make 100 ml suspension. Shake well before each use. Dosage is weight-based or age-based (usual paediatric dose):

  • 25–50 mg/kg body weight per day, divided into 4 doses (every 6 hours).
  • Typical example for 125 mg/5 ml: 5–10 ml every 6 hours depending on age/weight. Give for 5–14 days depending on the infection. Take on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) for better absorption. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.

Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
  • Skin rash (especially in patients with viral infections like EBV)
  • Allergic reactions (mild rash to severe anaphylaxis in penicillin-allergic patients)
  • Oral thrush or vaginal candidiasis (due to alteration of normal flora) Most side effects are mild; severe allergic reactions are rare but serious.

Package Type:

Plastic bottle of 100 ml (powder for oral suspension; supplied with or without measuring spoon; child-resistant cap; usually in a carton box with reconstitution instructions).

Storage Advice:

  • Unreconstituted powder: Store at room temperature (below 25–30°C), protected from moisture.
  • After reconstitution: Refrigerate (2–8°C) and use within 7–14 days (check label for exact time).
  • Do not freeze. Keep tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety Advice:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known penicillin or beta-lactam hypersensitivity (risk of severe allergic reaction).
  • Caution in patients with history of allergy, asthma, or renal impairment (dose adjustment may be needed).
  • Complete the full course to prevent development of resistance.
  • If severe diarrhoea, rash, or difficulty breathing occurs, stop use and seek immediate medical help.
  • Not effective against viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu).
  • Pregnancy: Generally considered safe (Category B). Breastfeeding: Compatible but monitor infant for diarrhoea or rash.
