Description
A soothing oral syrup for relief of dry, tickly coughs in young children (from 3 months). The active (soothing) ingredient is glycerol in a non-drug syrup base. 

Prescription
Usually OTC (sold without a prescription in many countries), but always follow local pharmacy guidance. The leaflet warns: not for use in babies under 3 months. 

Therapeutic category
Soothing demulcent cough syrup (symptomatic relief for dry/tickly cough). Not an antibiotic, bronchodilator or antihistamine. 

Active ingredients / composition

• Active: Glycerol (glycerin) — 0.75 mL per 5 mL of syrup (i.e. 15% v/v of the 5 mL dose). 
• Other ingredients / excipients: purified water; maltitol liquid (E965); citric acid; hydroxyethylcellulose; sodium citrate; sodium benzoate (E211) (preservative); apple flavour containing propylene glycol (E1520). The product is described as a colourless liquid.

None (nutritionally-relevant minerals not included). (Contains sodium benzoate preservative but not a mineral supplement.) 

Variant
125 mL bottle; apple flavoured paediatric syrup formulation (the marketed infant variant). Pack size commonly 125 mL with dosing spoon.

Consume type
Oral liquid (syrup), given by spoon or oral syringe. Shake if directed and measure accurately with the supplied spoon/device. 

Directions / usage 

• Do not use in babies under 3 months. 
• Children 3 months – 1 year: 5 mL (one 5 mL spoonful)
• Children 1 – 5 years: 10 mL (two 5 mL spoonfuls).
• Give 3 or 4 times in 24 hours if needed.
• If symptoms persist for more than 3 days, consult a doctor. (Follow the leaflet for exact local instructions.)

Common side effects

• Generally well tolerated; side effects are uncommon. Possible reactions include allergic skin reactions in sensitive individuals and mild gastrointestinal effects from sweeteners (maltitol/sorbitol may have a mild laxative effect). If any allergic signs occur, stop and seek medical advice.

Package type
125 mL bottle (child-resistant cap / carton) — usually supplied with a measuring spoon. Bottle is a colourless liquid (apple flavoured). 

Storage advice

• Keep bottle tightly closed.
• Do not store above 25 °C (room temperature) — follow printed storage instructions.
• Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Safety advice / precautions

• Do not give to infants under 3 months.
• Check for known allergies to any ingredients (e.g., propylene glycol, preservatives). 
• Contains maltitol/sorbitol — may cause a mild laxative effect; consult a doctor if the child has inherited fructose intolerance. 
• Contains sodium benzoate (E211) — leaflet reports amount per 5 mL; check if child is on a sodium-restricted diet. 
• If symptoms worsen, fever develops, breathing difficulty occurs, or symptoms persist >3 days — stop and seek medical attention.

Other glycerol-based soothing infant cough syrups or licensed paediatric cough remedies formulated for 3 months+; choice may vary by country. (Benylin also markets other children’s cough variants with different actives for older children.)
