Product description

Description:

An oral allopathic tablet used to treat high blood pressure and ease urinary difficulties caused by an enlarged prostate gland.

Prescription:

 Prescription Only Medicine (POM)

Therapeutic Category:

Alpha-1 Adrenergic Antagonist (commonly known as an Alpha-Blocker).

Active Ingredients/Composition:

  • 2mg Variant: Contains 2.42 mg Doxazosin Mesilate, equivalent to 2mg of active doxazosin.
  • 4mg Variant: Contains 4.84 mg Doxazosin Mesilate, equivalent to 4mg of active doxazosin.
  • Excipient note: Contains Lactose (24mg in the 2mg tablet; 48mg in the 4mg tablet).

Variant: 2mg (white, capsule/caplet-shaped uncoated tablet) and 4mg (white, diamond-shaped uncoated tablet) strengths. Both strengths feature a break line and can be divided into equal halves.

Consume Type

Oral use only (swallowed whole with water).

Directions/Usage:

  • Take one tablet daily at roughly the same time, either in the morning or evening, with or without food.
  • Dosing Protocol: The starting dose is always 1mg once daily to prevent a drastic, dangerous drop in blood pressure. Your doctor will gradually step up your dose to 2mg, 4mg, or up to a maximum of 16mg over several weeks based on clinical response.
  • Crucial Rule: If you miss your doses or stop taking doxazosin for a few days, do not restart at the 2mg or 4mg dose. You must consult your doctor to step back down and re-titrate from the 1mg baseline.

Common Side Effects

Postural hypotension (dizziness or fainting upon standing up quickly), fatigue, drowsiness, headache, palpitations (racing heart), fluid retention (swollen feet or ankles), respiratory infections (bronchitis/cough), and nasal congestion. [

Package Type

Aluminum-PVC blister sheets enclosed in a retail cardboard dispensing carton containing 28 or 30 tablets.

Storage Advice:

Store in the original package below 25°C to protect the uncoated tablets from excess ambient moisture and light degradation. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Safety Advice:

  • First-Dose Phenomenon: Doxazosin can cause sudden fainting or extreme lightheadedness after the very first dose or after a dose escalation. It is highly advised to take your first dose at bedtime.
  • Surgical Warning: If you are scheduled for cataract eye surgery, inform your ophthalmologist that you take an alpha-blocker, as it can cause Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) during the procedure.
  • Interactions: Use extreme caution when taking erectile dysfunction medications (PDE-5 inhibitors like sildenafil or tadalafil), as combining them can cause severe, symptomatic drops in blood pressure.
