Product description

Description:

Eusol Lotion B.P is a traditional antiseptic lotion used for wound cleansing, disinfection, and management of infected or sloughy wounds. It helps remove necrotic tissue (slough), reduces bacterial load, and promotes healing in pressure sores, leg ulcers, cuts, abrasions, and other open wounds. It acts as a mild chlorinated antiseptic.

Prescription:

Over-the-counter (OTC) in Ghana.

Therapeutic Category:

Topical Antiseptic / Wound Cleanser (Chlorinated antiseptic solution).

Active Ingredients/Composition:

  • Chlorinated Lime B.P. — 1.25% w/v (provides available chlorine)
  • Boric Acid B.P. — 1.25% w/v

The solution is prepared in purified water. It releases hypochlorite ions that provide antiseptic and debriding (slough-removing) action.

Vitamins: None.

Minerals: None (boric acid contains boron, but it is not classified as a mineral supplement here).

Variant:

  • Standard Eusol Lotion B.P (1.25% chlorinated lime + 1.25% boric acid). It is sometimes supplied as separate solutions (A & B) that are mixed before use, but the ready-to-use lotion is more common in Ghana.

Consume Type:

Topical – External lotion/solution (for wound irrigation, cleaning, or wet dressings; not for oral or internal use).

Directions/Usage:

  • Dilute if required (some protocols use it undiluted or 1:1 with normal saline).
  • Clean the wound gently with the solution using gauze or cotton wool.
  • Use as a soak or wet dressing; apply to the wound and cover with a secondary dressing.
  • Change dressings 1–2 times daily or as advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Use for short periods (usually not longer than 7–14 days continuously) to avoid delaying healing.

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild stinging, burning, or irritation at the application site.
  • Dryness or redness of surrounding skin.
  • Rarely: Allergic reactions or delayed wound healing with prolonged use.

Package Type:

Plastic bottle (commonly 100ml, 200ml, 500ml, or 1 litre) with screw cap. Often supplied in amber or clear bottles.

Storage Advice: Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature (below 25–30°C), protected from light. Keep tightly closed. Do not freeze. Prepare fresh dilutions if needed and use within recommended time (Eusol loses potency over time once opened or diluted).

Safety Advice:

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not use in deep or heavily bleeding wounds without medical advice.
  • Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to chlorine compounds or boric acid.
  • Prolonged or excessive use may delay wound healing or cause tissue irritation.
  • Not recommended for large open wounds or in neonates/infants due to boric acid absorption risk.
  • Stop use if severe irritation occurs and consult a doctor or wound care specialist.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Product Substitutes:

  • Savlon (cetrimide + chlorhexidine) solution
  • Hydrogen Peroxide solution
  • Normal Saline (0.9% sodium chloride) for gentle cleaning
  • Povidone-iodine (Betadine) solution
  • Chlorhexidine solutions
  • Other chlorinated or antiseptic wound cleansers available in Accra pharmacies.

Manufacturer/Marketer:

Various local manufacturers in Ghana, including Dannex Ayrton Starwin Plc, Letap, Kinapharma, or other contract manufacturers. Widely marketed and distributed by local pharmaceutical companies and importers.
