Product description

Description

An oral prescription blood glucose-lowering tablet that stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin, helping to control sugar levels and prevent diabetic complications.

Prescription:

Prescription Only Medicine (POM); strictly requires diagnostic monitoring and a valid medical prescription.

Therapeutic Category:

 Antidiabetic Agent / Second-Generation Sulfonylurea.

Active Ingredients/Composition:

Each standard tablet contains 80 mg of Gliclazide, manufactured to British Pharmacopoeia (BP) standards. Common inactive excipients include lactose monohydrate.

Variant

80mg Standard (Immediate-Release) Tablets. (Modified-release variants like 30mg or 60mg MR also exist under different brand formulations).

Consume Type:

Oral use only (swallowed whole with a glass of water).

Directions/Usage:

  • Dosage: The standard adult starting dose is 40mg to 80mg daily (half to one tablet). Your doctor may gradually increase this up to a maximum of 320mg daily based on blood glucose checks.
  • Administration Requirement: Take immediately before or with breakfast (or your first main meal of the day). If your total daily dose exceeds 160mg, it must be split into two equal doses taken with your morning and evening main meals.
  • Crucial Rule: Never skip a meal after taking this tablet, as it forces insulin release and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar.

Common Side Effects

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is the most common risk, causing sweating, shakiness, confusion, hunger, and dizziness. Other side effects include mild nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, temporary headaches, or mild weight gain over long-term use.

Package Type

A retail cardboard box containing foil-backed blister strips totalling a 28-tablet pack (typically 2 x 14 layout).

Storage Advice

Store in its original protective packaging at a room temperature below 25°C. Keep completely shielded from moisture, direct heat, and light. Store safely away from children.

Safety Advice:

  • Hypoglycemia Hazard: Always carry a fast-acting sugar source (like glucose tablets, fruit juice, or jelly sweets) to treat sudden low blood sugar episodes.
  • Contraindications: Strictly contraindicated in Type 1 Diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe liver or kidney failure, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Interactions: Avoid alcohol completely, as it severely spikes the risk of deep hypoglycemic crashes. Inform your doctor if you take antifungals (like miconazole or fluconazole) or NSAID painkillers, as they can amplify the drug’s effect.

Manufacturer/Marketer:

Marketed and distributed through international pharmacy channels by Vega UK / Vega Pharmaceuticals.

Country of Origin:

 United Kingdom (UK) / India.
