Product description

Description:

Joy Ointment 40g is a popular multi-purpose topical ointment widely used in Ghana for the relief of minor skin conditions. It is commonly applied to treat skin rashes, eczema, itching, insect bites, minor burns, cuts, and general skin irritation. It combines anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and soothing properties to reduce itching, redness, and discomfort while promoting healing of the affected skin area.

Prescription: Over-the-counter (OTC). No prescription required; freely available in pharmacies, chemical shops, and supermarkets across Ghana.

Therapeutic Category:

Topical anti-inflammatory / Antiseptic / Soothing skin ointment (dermatological preparation for minor skin irritations and rashes).

Active Ingredients/Composition: Typical formulation (standard for Joy Ointment in the Ghanaian market):

  • Betamethasone valerate 0.1% w/w (potent corticosteroid for reducing inflammation and itching)
  • Clotrimazole 1% w/w (antifungal to treat or prevent fungal infections)
  • Gentamicin sulphate 0.1% w/w (antibiotic to treat or prevent bacterial infections) Base: White soft paraffin or similar cream base.

Vitamins: None.

Minerals: None.

Variant: Standard triple-action ointment in 40g tube (also available in smaller 20g tubes in some outlets; “Joy Ointment” is the common brand name).

Consume Type: Topical (external ointment; apply to affected skin only; not for ingestion or use in eyes/mouth).

Directions/Usage: Clean and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected skin 2–3 times daily, or as directed by a doctor/pharmacist. Gently rub in until absorbed. Use for the shortest duration necessary (usually 7–14 days maximum). Do not cover with occlusive dressings unless advised. Wash hands after application unless treating the hands.

Common Side Effects:

  • Local skin irritation, burning, stinging, or dryness (especially at the beginning)
  • Skin thinning or stretch marks with prolonged use (due to the steroid)
  • Increased risk of secondary infection if used long-term
  • Rare: Allergic reactions (rash, swelling) or skin lightening with extended use Most side effects are mild when used correctly for short periods.

Package Type: Aluminium collapsible tube of 40g (with screw cap; often in a simple carton box).

Storage Advice: Store at room temperature (below 30°C), in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety Advice:

  • External use only; avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
  • Do not use on broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas without medical advice.
  • Contraindicated for long-term use (risk of skin atrophy, steroid dependence, and rebound flare).
  • Not for facial use for prolonged periods (high risk of thinning and perioral dermatitis).
  • Caution in children (increased absorption risk), pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
  • If no improvement after 7 days or if condition worsens, stop use and consult a doctor.
  • Misuse for skin lightening is common but dangerous — avoid this practice.

Product Substitutes: Other triple-action ointments (betamethasone + clotrimazole + gentamicin) in Ghana: Skderm Cream (SKANT), Candiderma, Quadriderm, or generic versions. For milder cases: Betamethasone alone, clotrimazole cream, or gentamicin cream. Consult a dermatologist or pharmacist for safer alternatives.
