Description

Cefixime is an orally active, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections—such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pharyngitis, otitis media), gonorrhea, Lyme disease, and typhoid. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.

Directions / Usage

• Adults and children >10 years / >50 kg: Recommended dose is 200–400 mg per day, either as a single daily dose or divided into two doses, typically for 7–14 days depending on infection severity.
• Example dosing: 200 mg once or twice daily for 5–14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection.

Common Side Effects

• Frequent: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness. 
• Allergic reactions: rash, urticaria, pruritus. 
• Rare but serious: Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis), blood cell count changes.
