Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate Powder

Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate Powder

K-Bind is an oral ion-exchange resin used to treat hyperkalaemia (elevated blood potassium levels). It binds potassium in the gastrointestinal tract, exchanging it for calcium, and removes the bound potassium through feces. It is mainly used in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, or those taking medications that raise potassium (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, spironolactone, etc.). It is not for emergency treatment of life-threatening hyperkalaemia (IV calcium, insulin-glucose, salbutamol, or dialysis are used in such cases).

Prescription:

Prescription-only.

Therapeutic Category:

Cation-exchange resin / Potassium binder (Non-absorbed oral agent for hyperkalaemia management.

Active Ingredients/Composition:

  • Active ingredient: Calcium polystyrene sulphonate – 99.93% w/w
  • Each gram contains approximately 1 mmol of exchangeable calcium (which is released in exchange for potassium).
  • No other significant active ingredients. It is a pure ion-exchange resin powder.

Vitamins: None

Minerals: Calcium (from calcium polystyrene sulphonate) – provides calcium ions in exchange for potassium, but it is not used as a calcium supplement.

Variant:

  • K-Bind Powder (most common form)
  • Available as 15 g sachets or 300 g bulk bottles
  • Related product: K-Bind Suspension (ready-to-use liquid version)

Consume Type:

  • Adults: Typical starting dose is 15 g once daily (1 sachet), suspended in 30–50 ml of water, stirred well, and taken orally.
  • May be increased to 15 g three times daily (45 g/day) depending on serum potassium level.
  • Take with or after meals to reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
  • Do not take other oral medicines at the same time (resin can bind them).
  • Duration: Until serum potassium normalizes (acute) or as maintenance therapy in chronic hyperkalaemia (with regular monitoring).
  • Children: 0.5–1 g/kg/day (consult paediatric nephrologist).

Common Side Effects:

  • Constipation (most frequent – often requires laxatives)
  • Nausea, vomiting, anorexia
  • Abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence
  • Hypocalcaemia (low calcium – uncommon)
  • Hypercalcemia (high calcium – rare, from excessive calcium release) Rare but serious: Intestinal necrosis (very rare but potentially fatal), severe constipation/obstruction, faecal impaction

Package Type:

  • Individual foil sachets of 15 g (usually packs of 10–30 sachets)
  • Plastic bottle of 300 g (with scoop/measuring spoon) Labelled carton includes instructions, dosage, and warnings.

Storage Advice: Store at room temperature (below 25–30°C) in original packaging, protected from moisture. Keep tightly closed. Do not freeze. Out of reach of children.

Safety Advice:

  • Used only under medical supervision – regular serum potassium and calcium monitoring is essential.
  • Contraindicated in bowel obstruction, severe constipation, or known hypersensitivity.
  • Caution in inflammatory bowel disease, severe constipation history, or concurrent use of sorbitol-containing products (increases risk of intestinal necrosis).
  • Do not mix with fruit juices or sorbitol-based foods/drinks (necrosis risk).
  • Stop immediately and seek medical help if severe abdominal pain, no bowel movements for several days, vomiting, or signs of low potassium/high calcium appear.
  • Not a substitute for emergency hyperkalaemia treatment (IV calcium, insulin-glucose, dialysis).
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Product Substitutes:

  • Generic calcium polystyrene sulphonate powder (various importers)
  • Resonium Calcium (Sanofi brand – same active ingredient)
  • Sodium polystyrene sulphonate (Kayexalate / Resonium A – sodium-based alternative)
